‘Boogaloo’ Bolden trumpets Houston blues
Houston Chronicle – December 12, 2013 – by Andrew Dansby
Trumpeter James Bolden is a big man who likes to dance. His restless feet earned him the nickname “Boogaloo” from his boss, B.B. King, who has employed him for more than 30 years, including two decades as his bandleader.
Despite more than 100 dates with King, Bolden, 63, found time in 2013 to make his own record, “No News ‘Jus’ the Blues. The native Houstonian doesn’t favor the kind of blues where, he says, you “sit at a table and drink in a smoky club, cigarette in your hand. I like it when you really tap your toes and get going.”
He caps his mission statement with a chesty chuckle. Bolden is quick to laugh; he’s an exuberant presence that feels of a kind with his music, a big-bandstand blues with the unmistakable mark of Houston – keening brass parts that drive listeners toward the dance floor.
